    What is Tag Question?

    শাব্দিক অর্থে ‘Tag’ বলতে জুড়ে দেওয়া বুজায়। আর Question এর অর্থ “প্রশ্ন”। তাই আমরা বলতে পারি বক্তা তার বক্তব্য সম্পর্কে স্রোতার মত যাচাইয়ের জন্য অনেক সময় বক্তব্যের শেষে যে, ছোট ছোট প্রশ্ন জুড়ে দেয় তাকেই Tag Questions বলে।

    Tag Question গঠন  : Statement এর পর একটি কমা বসবে + সাহায্যকারী verb বসবে + Statement  এর subject এর pronoun বসবে + প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন বসবে।

    যেমন : Ramik is a good student,  isn’t he?

    Tag Questions দুই প্রকার যথা:  1. Affirmative Tag (হ্যাঁ বোধক)
                                                        2. Negative Tag (না বোধক)

    →Affirmative Sentence এর Tag Questions গুলো Negative হয়ে থাকে। Negative form টি সব সময়ই সংক্ষিপ্ত আকারে লিখতে হয়।

    Person (female) singular she  Diba has gone there, hasn’t she?
    Person (female) plural they  Faiza and Nuzat will come, won’t they?
    Non-person  (singular) it  The cow lives on grass, doesn’t it?
    Non-person  (plural) they  Birds can fly, can’t they?
    Nothing (এর ক্ষেত্রে tag হবে affirmative) / anything / everything /something

     

    it  Nothing happened yesterday, did it?

     Everything was stolen, wasn’t ?

    Something is better than nothing, isn’t it ?

     Anything is possible for us, isn’t it?

    Everyone, anyone, (none, nobody, no one) এর ক্ষেত্রে tag হবে affirmative) they  Everyone helped him, didn’t they?

     None can help us, can they?

     Nobody went there, did they?

     No one believes a liar, do they?

    No/every + noun he/she/they  Every mother loves her child, doesn’t she?

     Every teacher is qualified, aren’t they?

    Neither of / either of / all of + you you  All of you have heard the name, haven’t you?
    Neither of / either of / all of + us we  All of us know it, don’t we?
    Neither of / either of / all of + them they  Neither of them will come, will they?
    Clause it  That he will come is not sure, isn’t sure?
    Allah He  Allah is Almighty, isn’t He?
    The + adjective they  The poor are happy, aren’t they?
    One one  One should obey one’s parents, shouldn’t one?
    There there  There are many boys in the room, aren’t there?
    Collective / material / abstract noun it  Water has no colour, has it ?

     Kindness is  a great virtue, isn’t it?

     The mother rose in her, didn’t it?

    This / that it  This is a book, isn’t it?

     That is my book, isn’t it?

    These / those they  These are my books, aren’t they?

     Those are your pens, aren’t they?

    * Everyone, anyone, none, nobody, no one – এগুলো যদি Statement এ subject  হিসাবে আসে তাহলে tag question এর pronoun  হিসাবে they  বসে তাই সাহায্যকারী verb  টি plural হয়|

    যেমন:  (i) Anyone is allowed, aren’t they?

     

    Tag Question গঠনের নিয়মঃ

    Rule 1:

    Rules Example
    মূল বাক্যে Auxiliary verb না থাকলে Tense অনুযায়ী do/ did/ does/ don’t/ didn’t/ doesn’t বসে। He came here yesterday, didn’t he?

    Rule 2:

    Rules Example
    →বাক্যের subject যদি All of us/some of us/most of us /majority of us/ many of us/ every one of us/ none of us→ we

    He came here yesterday, didn’t he?

    All of us attended the meeting, didn’t we?

    Rule 3:

    Rules Example
    বাক্যের Subject যদি All of them/ some of them/ most of them/ majority of them/ many of them/ every one of them/ none of them→ they

    None of them can speak Italian, can they?

    Rule 4:

    Rules Example
    বাক্যের subject যদি All of you/ some of you/ most of you/ majority of you/many of you/ every one of you/ none of you→ you

    Most of you can’t speak English, can you?

    Rule 5: Tag Question of Imperative Sentence

    Rules Example

    যে Sentence দ্বারা কোন আদেশ, উপদেশ, অনুরোধ, নিষেধ ও প্রস্তাব ইত্যাদি বোঝায় তাকে Imperative Sentence বলে।

    →Imperative Sentence চেনার উপায়: 1. Subject থাকে না (Subject ‘You’ উহ্য থাকে) ।

    1. Let/Don’t/be/V1/Have/Never/Please/Kindly/Always etc.দ্বারা Sentence টি শুরু হয়।

    Let’s/Let us→ shall we?

    অন্যান্য প্রায় সকল ক্ষেত্রে→will you/won’t you? বসে।

    Let us complete our lesson, shall we?

    Do the work, will you/won’t you?

    Rule 6: 

    Rules Example

    কোন Sentence এ Hardly, rarely, barely, scarcely, seldom, few, little, never, nobody, no, not, none, no one, none, noting, neither, nowhere etc. থাকলে  sentence টি  negative অর্থ প্রদান করে এক্ষেত্রে Tag Question টি  affirmative হয়।

    Rita hardly comes here, does she?

    Rule 7:

    As well as, with, along with, together with, and not, in addition to, including, accompanied by/with etc. দ্বারা দুটি Subject যুক্ত থাকলে  প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী Tag Question করতে হয়।

    They as well as he are responsible for this incident, aren’t they?

    Rule 8: 

    Rules Example

    Not only….but also, Either….or, Neither….nor, Whether….or etc. দ্বারা দুটি Subject যুক্ত sentence থাকলে দ্বিতীয় Subject অনুযায়ী Tag Question করতে হয়।

    Neither Rita nor her friends are qualified for the job, are they?

    Rule 9:

    প্রবাদ বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে →isn’t it?

    All covet, all lost, isn’t it?

    Rule 10:

    যে কোন প্রকার wish→ don’t I?

    Happy birthday, don’t I?

    Rule 11:

    Subject and verb বিহীন exclamation mark (!) থাকলে → isn’t it?

    Nice! Isn’t it?

    Rule 12: 

    Rules Example

    Long live + subject থাকলে → mayn’t + subject (pronoun)?

    Long live your dad, mayn’t he?

    Rule 13: 

    Rules Example

    Everybody/somebody/anybody/everyone/someone/anyone এর পরে verb “is” থাকলে→aren’t they? হবে।[N.B: Sentenceটি affirmative হলে]

    Everyone is present, aren’t they?

    Rule 14: 

    Rules Example

    Everybody/somebody/anybody/everyone/someone/anyone এর পরে verb এর সাথে“s/es”সংযুক্ত থাকলে→ don’t they? হবে।[N.B: Sentenceটি Affirmative হলে]

    Everybody loves a flower, don’t they?

    Rule 15:

    Everybody/somebody/anybody/everyone/someone/anyone এর পরে verb এর সাথে“was”সংযুক্ত থাকলে→ weren’t they?হবে।[N.B: Sentenceটি affirmative হলে]

    Everybody was here, weren’t they?

    Rule 16: 

    Rules Example

    Everybody/somebody/anybody/everyone/someone/anyone এদের পরে verb “has” থাকলে haven’t they? [N.B: Sentenceটি affirmative হলে]

    Everybody has present, haven’t they?

    Rule 17: 

    Rules Example

    Nobody/none/no one এর পরে verb “is”থাকলে→are they? হবে, verb এর সাথে “s/es”সংযুক্ত থাকলে→ do they? হবে, verb “was” থাকলে were they? verb “has” থাকলে have they?

    1. Nobody is here,are they?
    2. Nobody believes a cheat,do they?

    Rule 18: 

    Rules Example

    Common noun যখন abstract noun এর মত কাজ করে (the father/ the mother/ the brother/ the sister/ the breast etc.) অর্থাৎ মাতৃত্ব, পিতৃত্ব, পশুত্ব এরূপ বোঝালে Tag করতে Subject →it হবে (She, he) হবে না)।

    1. Nobody is here,are they?
    2. Nobody believes a cheat,do they?

    Rule 19: 

    Rules Example

    কোন দেশের নাম subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে Tag questions এর subject হিসেবে →she ব্যবহৃত হয়।

    1. The mother rose in her, didn’t it?

    Rule 20: 

    Rules Example

    The Moon/ earth/ train/ ship/ river/ ferry etc. subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে Tag questions এর subject হিসেবে →she ব্যবহৃত হবে।

    1. Vatican city is a small country, isn’t she?
    2. The earth is round, isn’t she?

    Rule 21: 

    Rules Example

    →Sentence এর subject That/this থাকলে Tag questions এর subject → it হয়।

    →Sentence এর subject These/those থাকলে Tag questions এর subject → they হয়।

    1. That is my pen,isn’t it?
    2. These are my books,aren’t they?

    Rule 22: 

    Rules Example

    Who cares/who loves/who saves থাকলে Tag questions হবে→ do they?

    1. Who cares, do they?

    Rule 23: 

    Rules Example

    Statement এর শুরুতে কোন Adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে Common Noun হিসেবে বাক্যের Subject হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে Tag Question এর Subject they হয়।

    1. The rich are not always happy, are they?

    Rule 24: 

    Rules Example

    I, You, He, We etc এই Pronoun গুলো Proper Noun হিসেবে Sentence এর Subject হলে Tag Question এর Subject it হবে।

    1. ‘You’ is a pronoun, isn’t it?

    Rule 25:

    Compound sentence এর উভয় অংশের subject এক হলে 1st অংশের subject এবং verb অনুসারে Tag questions করতে হয়। but উভয় অংশের subject ভিন্ন হলে 2nd অংশের subject এবং verb অনুসারে Tag questions করতে হয়।

    1. John studied hard but could not pass, didn’t he?

    Rule 26:

    Complex sentence এর 1st clause এ believe/ hope/ think/ see etc. এর পর “that” উহ্য থাকলে 2nd clause এর subject and verb অনুযায়ী Tag questions গঠন করতে হয়। কিন্তু “that” থাকলে, 1st এর subject ও verb অনুযায়ী Tag questions গঠন করতে হয়।

    1. I think he is happy, isn’t he?

    Rule 27:

    I think Me thinks, I guess, I feel, I hope থাকলে এগুলোর পরের clauseটির Tag করতে হয়; কিন্তু এগুলোর পরে that থাকলে ‘that’-এর পূর্বের subject ও verb অনুযায়ী Tag করতে হয় (Principal clause অনুযায়ী)—

    1. I think he is honest,isn’t he?
    2. I hope you are keeping great,aren’t you?

    Rule 27: 

    Rules Example

    No-এর সঙ্গে (man, woman, boy, girl, teacher, student, mother, father) person থাকলে Tag করতে subject হবে—they?

    1. No man is immortal, are they?

    Rule 28: 

    Rules Example

    Either of the boys, Either of the girls, Either of the students, Either of the sisters দ্বারা বাক্য শুরু হলে Tag করতে Subject ‘they’ হয়। ফলে verb-ও plural হয়:

    1. Either of the boys has lost his bag,haven’t they?
    2. Either of the girls is intelligent,aren’t they?

    Rule 29: 

    Rules Example

    Neither of the boys, Neither of the girls, Neither of students, Neither of the sisters দ্বারা বাক্য শুরু হলে Tag করতে subject ‘They’ হবে—ফলে verb-ও plural হবে।

    1. Neither of the girls has lost her pen, have they?

    Rule 30: 

    Rules Example

    Every এর সঙ্গে man, boy, girl, teacher, mother, father, students, person থাকলে Tag questions they বসে।

    1. Every man is here, aren’t they?

    Rule 31: 

    Rules Example

    Some এর সঙ্গে boys, girls, teachers, mothers, fathers, students, persons থাকলে Tag questions they বসে।

    1. Some teachers are really sincere,aren’t they?
    2. Some students are irregular,aren’t they?
    3. Some boys do not study regularly,do they?

    Rule 32: 

    Rules Example

    Any এর সঙ্গে man, woman, boy, girl, teacher, mother, father, students, person থাকলে Tag questions they বসে।

    1. Any students can do the job, can’t they?

    Rule 33: 

    Rules Example

    Any এর সঙ্গে man, woman, boy, girl, teacher, mother, father, students, person থাকলে Tag questions they বসে।

    1. Any students can do the job, can’t they?

    Rule 33: 

    Rules Example

    A few, very few, very little থাকলে Negative Tag হয়।

    1. She has little Idea about it,has she?
    2. There are few toys in the house,are there?

    Rule 34: 

    Rules Example

    That/Gerund/Infinitive/clause subject হলে Tag করতে Subject ‘it’ হয়।

    1. To tell lies is a sin,isn’t it?
    2. Swimming is a good exercise,isn’t it?

    Rule 35: 

    Rules Example

    পরিমাণ বা সময়বাচক Plural word/phrase subject হলেও subject/singular হয় এবং Tag করতে subject→ it হয়।

    1. Twenty years is a long time, isn’t it?
    2. Ten miles is a long-distance, isn’t it?

    Rule 36: 

    Rules Example

    The number of, the variety of subject হলে subject/verb singular হয় এবং Tag করতে subject→‘it’ হয়।

    1. The number of students is increasing isn’t it?
    2.  

    Rule 37: 

    Rules Example

    It is I, It is you, It is he-এ জাতীয় শব্দের পর ‘who’ Relative pronoun থাকলে মূল subject ও মূল verb খুঁজে বের করে Tag করতে হয়|

    1. It is I who am your teacher,aren’t I?
    2. It is I who have broken the glam,haven’t I?

    Rule 38: 

    Rules Example

    সাহায্যকারী verb যুক্ত Exclamatory sentence এ isn’t/ aren’t বসে এবং subject noun হলে এর pronoun বসে |

    1. How beautiful the bird is,isn’tit?
    2. What a fool I am, aren’t I?

    Rule 39: 

    Rules Example

    মূল verb যুক্ত Exclamatory sentence এর শেষে don’t/didn’t/doesn’t ব্যবহার করে Tag questions করতে হয়।
